• ロレンスの死後に刊行された普及版『知恵の七柱』は3種類の版（1935年／1940年／1973年版）があり、それぞれ内容に異なった部分があります。
• 相違点は「Introductory Chapter（序章）の有無」（序章＝1922年オクスフォード・テキストの第1章に相当）、そして「削除・伏せ字箇所の有無」です。1935年版には前者がなく、そして末弟Ａ・Ｗ・ロレンスの判断により、「存命中の方々の感情を損ねないため」本文が編集され、空白箇所がありました。
• 1940年版から「Introductory Chapter」が復活。さらに1973年版では「削除・伏せ字」がなくなりました。このため、1973年版が普及版の＜完全版＞ということになります。
• このページでは、削除の対象となった箇所を指摘し、そこになにが入っていたかを画像で示しました。（該当箇所の色づけは八木谷によるものです）
• 付録として、七柱でもっとも普及していると思われる1962年ペンギン版（1940年 Cape 版と地図と挿画は違うが本文は同一）、英語廉価版の代表格として1997年 Wordsworth 版 、そしてネット版の扱いも記しました

Introductory Chapter の有無と、Preface にある削除に関する説明
1935年 Cape 版	Introductory Chapter 未収録 pp.21-26 に Preface by A. W. Lawrence を掲載。削除に関する断り書きは以下の通り The text of the present edition is identical with that of the thirty-guinea edition of 1926, except for the following omissions and alterations. The omissions are necessary to save hurting the feelings of persons still living; they come on pages 61, 62, and 321 where gaps of the same length are left in the present text. The 1926 edition contains no Chapter XI; the chapters have now been renumbered to remove this anomaly...(p.24)
1940年 Cape 版 1962年 Penguin 版	Introductory Chapter 収録 pp.15-20 に AWL の Preface 掲載。上記の削除に関する部分は p.18 に掲載。1935年版の末尾 (p.20) にあった挿画に関する断り書きを削除し、以下の POSTSCRIPT を加えて、序章が復活したことを記してある ※ただし、Penguin 版には1940年 Cape 版に関する言及が一切ない [ * ] The subscribers’ edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom contained no chapter eleven, for the original first chapter had been omitted in the course of proof-correction, and renumbering proceeded only as far as the next ten. For the first published edition (1935) the chapters were renumbered throughout, so as to remove this anomaly. In this edition the suppressed chapter again appears in its rightful place, but in order to avoid further renumbering, it has been entitled Introductory Chapter. In 1939, it was included in Oriental Assembly among other uncollected writings of T. E. Lawrence, together with a short explanatory note of my own. A.W.L.

1997年 Wordsworth 版	Introductory Chapter 収録 Preface by A. W. Lawrence は不掲載。かわりに Angus Calder (1942-2008) による文学論的解説が掲載され（pp.XXVI-XXVII）、その最後部分 (Notes on the Spelling of Proper Names の項の The Spelling of Arabic names varies greatly 以下。アラビア語転写の問題）は AWL の文章の最後をそのまま用いている

* 【田隅恒生氏による補足】　1962年の Penguin 初版につけられた AWL の Preface は、末尾の Postscript に現れる、In this edition... 以下の文言により、名誉棄損を考慮して 1935年版で削除されていたオクスフォード・テキストの冒頭部分がこの Penguin 版で本来の場所〔つまり本文の冒頭〕に再生されたが、章番号をつけ直さずに独立の「序章 Introductory Chapter」とした、という趣旨と読める。換言すれば、AWLは Penguin 版の刊行によってオクスフォード・テキスト第1章を復活させたと理解されるが、実はその措置は Jonathan Cape 刊行の 1940年簡約版ですでに行なわれている。Penguin の Postscript を含む Preface は 1940年版のものを本文とともに移したにすぎず、In this edition ...の [this edition]とは、本来AWL が 1940年版を指した言葉だった。1940年版と Penguin の両方を読む人はいないから、『七柱』の読者のほとんどを占める Penguin の読者は前記の事情を読み取ることができず、第1章は Penguin によって初めて復活したと信じさせられる。図らずも Penguin はその厖大な読者に対して第1章復活の名誉を担う結果となった。Penguin にはどこにも 1940年版の言及がないことに加えて、前記のいきさつの注釈なしに Postscript を流用したこの処置は、意図したかどうかは別として、適正なものとはいいがたい。Penguin 刊行に際して、AWL/Penguin は、最低、本の内容は 1940年版と同一であること、あるいは、Postscript にそれが1940年版用に執筆されたものだったことを注記しておくべきだった。(17 Sep. 2011)
